WEILAND: Bavaria, Germany is the original homeland of the Weiland or Weilandt family. Weiland is a patronymic name, a type of surname that derived from the given name of the father of the original bearer. Weilandt was derived from a Germanic personal name that is composed of the elements wig, which means war, and land, which means territory or land. The popularity of the name Weiland or Weilandt is due to the fact that it was borne by the supernaturally skilled smith of a folk legend. It is also for this reason that the name Weiland was applied as a nickname to smiths. This family name was first found in Bavaria, where the name was seen in the mediaeval period as one of the notable families of the region. From the 13th century the surname was identified with the great social and economic evolution which made this territory a landmark contributor to the development of Europe. They were also found in the northern regions: Meister Wiland was the builder (1333) of the Peter-Paul church in Liegnitz, Silesia. The name Wieland or Weilandt was also famous through the legend of Wielandt der Schmied, the most artful of all black smiths. Indeed, chronicles mention an actual "Wieland der Schmied" in Freiburg in 1341 Other chronicles mention Konrad Wielant of Esslingen in 1301, and Mathias Weland of Greifswald, Pomerania, in 1374. The spelling variations of the name Weilandt include Weiland, Wieland, Wielandt, Wiland, Wielant, Weland and many more. Hilmar Weilandt (born 29 September 1966) is a former East German international footballer who spent all of his professional career at FC Hansa Rostock, and is the father of fellow footballer Tom Weilandt. Gerhard Weilandt (born 1957 in Hagen) is a German art historian who after completing his doctorate in history at the University of Bonn in 1989, he was a research assistant from 1995 to 2004 in the DFG research project "Franconian panel painting, since 2011 he has been professor of art history with a focus on the Middle Ages at the University of Greifswald and he research and teaching focuses on Ottonian art, the social history of art, the late Gothic artist workshop, image functions and sacred topography, art history of the Baltic Sea region and digital art history. Manfred Weylandt (born July 12, 1942 in Berlin; dead February 14, 1972 ibid) was a victim of the Berlin Wall because members of the GDR border troops shot him while trying to escape from the GDR. Wouter Weylandt (born September 27, 1984 in Gent; dead May 9, 2011 in Mezzanego was a Belgian cyclist who won the U23 event of the GP Waregem in 2004, in 2005 he won the Belgian GP Briek Schotte, celebrated his greatest successes with stage wins at the "Vuelta a España 2008" and the "Giro d’Italia 2010", on May 9, 2011, Weylandt had a serious fall during the "Giro d’Italia" on the descent from Passo del Bocco around 25 kilometers before the finish of the third stage in Rapallo and while he was orienting himself backwards to make sure of the current racing situation, he brushed against a wall with the left pedal or the left handlebar and was thrown about 20 meters to the other side of the street, where he collided with another object and died at the scene of the accident despite attempts to resuscitate immediately. Carl Otto Weilandt was a well-known millman, contractor and builder, head of the prosperous and progressive firm in Minnesota, United States of América, on the year 1905.
